PHILOSOPHY
I see myself as a facilitator who participates in participative leadership. As an adult learner, I strongly believe and practice Dr Malcolm Knowles theory of Andragogy, in the classroom. I bring in a course work practice from my experiences and academic training. I believe students have an opportunity to draw on their life experiences while utilizing course content based on their work and family histories as well as educational experiences. I coordinate group discussions, peer-to-peer teaching, project learning, and lecture. My goal is to connect the students to develop a framework from their life experiences.
Human Development is a concept, which embodies the entire being. In the area of human development, students are able to apply their life, as well as their colleagues’ experiences, to better understand their cognitive, emotional, social and physical processes through their life span. By reflecting on these experiences, students gain a better grasp of their development. I truly value the opportunity to work with diverse populations in the social service fields.
During my undergraduate study, I was introduced to the field of Human Services, in which I felt was designed for me. As I pursued my graduate studies, I studied the theory of Andragogy, and I was intrigued at how the philosophy helped me to understand my process of learning. The study of Human Development, and Andragogy empowered me with the understanding of how and why I learn the way that I do; therefore I developed a desire to empower other adults with that same knowledge.
